The memorandum provides for the exchange of methodologies, knowledge, and tools to improve the generation and management of information on fishing activities in the Brazilian Amazon.
Brazil. September 15, 2026 — Brazil’s Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA) and the Amazon Waters Alliance signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen data generation and monitoring of fishing activities in the Brazilian Amazon.
The agreement provides for technical and institutional exchange of methodologies and knowledge related to the generation, management, and use of fisheries information, as well as the development and assessment of tools for fisheries self-monitoring.
Within this framework, the parties may assess the use or integration of Ictio Audio or other digital technologies, in accordance with the mandates of the institutions involved and through the appropriate specific instruments.
Rivetla Edipo Araujo Cruz, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Brazil, and Dino Delgado, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) representative to the Amazon Waters Alliance, signed the Memorandum, which will remain in effect for five years.
For the Amazon Waters Alliance, improving the generation and availability of fisheries information helps build a better understanding of the dynamics of this activity and generate evidence to support the sustainable management of fishery resources.
The memorandum thus creates a space for technical collaboration to advance tools and knowledge that can contribute to improved fisheries management in the Brazilian Amazon.
