The Amazon Waters Alliance, in collaboration with the Ibero-American Network for Participatory Science  and the Brazilian Citizen Science Network, presented the Data Ethics Toolkit for participatory science projects on November 20. This is a translation of the Data Ethics Toolkit into Spanish and Portuguese, as a contribution to strengthening good practices in the region.

The Data Ethics Toolkit was led by Caren Cooper (North Carolina State University) and Lisa Rasmussen (University of North Carolina Charlotte), and resulted from the collaborative work of a broad international community, mobilized by the Association for the Advancement of Participatory Science (AAPS).

The toolkit supports teams and leadership in identifying and balancing ethical obligations related to governance, integrity, reporting, recognition, and data return in participatory science projects.

The launch took place within the framework of the Second Ibero-American Congress on Open Science. During the presentation, the importance of advancing toward shared standards for open science was highlighted, with an emphasis on transparency, equity, and shared responsibility.

In addition to making this resource available, the Alliance will promote a regional capacity-building process, which includes forming a community of practice — a space for sharing learning — a train-the-trainer program to expand local capacities, and an initiative clinic to explore how to navigate data ethics in practical cases. This process will also include documenting lessons learned and connecting with networks and organizations interested in expanding the use and adoption of the Toolkit in different contexts.

The training program and event calendar will be published soon for those interested in participating.
